Future Forward Factories: Arvind and Fashion for Good Pioneer a Near Net-Zero Blueprint for Textile Manufacturing

In a groundbreaking move for sustainable fashion, Arvind Limited and Fashion for Good have launched the Future Forward Factories initiative — a bold attempt to redefine how Tier 2 textile factories operate across India’s supply chain. With over half of the industry's CO₂ emissions and the majority of its water and chemical usage concentrated in Tier 2 manufacturing, this initiative takes direct aim at where transformation is most urgently needed.

At its heart is a two-fold strategy: the development of a comprehensive blueprint for eco-efficient production and the creation of a cutting-edge manufacturing facility in Gujarat. This site, focused on cotton woven and knit fabrics, aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 93%, conserve 60 litres of water per kilogram of fabric, and serve as the industry's first near net-zero textile production hub.

The initiative does more than innovate—it implements. Backed by catalytic funders like the Laudes Foundation and Apparel Impact Institute, the project bridges the gap between sustainable theory and real-world feasibility. It integrates renewable energy, waterless processing technologies, improved chemical management (ZDHC level 3 compliance), and enhanced wastewater treatment systems — while also building in frameworks for a Just Transition, ensuring that workers are supported through the shift.

“This is about real, systemic change,” said Katrin Ley, Managing Director of Fashion for Good. “By tackling Tier 2 emissions and water use head-on, we’re demonstrating that sustainability and commercial viability can go hand in hand.”

Arvind’s Vice Chairman, Punit Lalbhai, reinforced this sentiment: “We want to show that sustainability can scale. This isn’t just a pilot — it’s a pathway for the entire industry.”

Set to debut at the Global Fashion Summit 2025, the open-source blueprint will be made available by September 2025, offering other manufacturers a roadmap to transition toward low-impact production. Fashion for Good is actively inviting more suppliers to co-create additional blueprints tailored to varied textile settings, aiming to unlock sector-wide adoption.

As the fashion industry intensifies its shift toward circularity and climate-conscious manufacturing, Future Forward Factories offers not just hope — but a high-impact, high-credibility model for the future.
